A Belém Half-Day Itinerary from Lisbon

Belém is the easiest half-day trip in Lisbon: a flat riverside stretch where the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries and the world’s most famous custard tarts all sit within a short walk of one another. This itinerary threads them together in a logical order, with the transport and timings worked out, so you can do the whole district in roughly half a day. Belém is famously flat and compact: about four kilometres of riverside ties the whole Age-of-Discoveries story together, monument by monument.

Getting to Belém

The classic approach is tram 15E, which you can board at Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio, or Cais do Sodré. It’s slower than the train — roughly 35–45 minutes — but more scenic as the city gives way to the riverfront. Alternatives are the train to Belém station or a bus. Coming back, the 728 bus to Praça do Comércio is a good alternative to the often-packed return tram.

The Half-Day Plan

1. Start Early at the Jerónimos Monastery

Begin with the monastery, both because it’s the highlight and because it has the worst queue — and that queue only grows through the morning. It opens at 10:00 and is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Spend your time in the two-storey cloister and the church, where Vasco da Gama and the poet Camões are entombed. 2. Pastéis de Belém

Just east of the monastery on Rua de Belém is Pastéis de Belém, baking its custard tarts to a recipe linked to the monastery since 1837. There’s almost always a line for takeaway, but the cavernous tile-lined café inside usually seats faster than the queue suggests — order them warm, dusted with cinnamon.

3. Padrão dos Descobrimentos

A roughly ten-minute riverside walk west brings you to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries), a 52-metre ship’s-prow monument inaugurated in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. A lift inside reaches a viewing deck over the Tagus and the monastery.

4. Belém Tower

From the monument it’s about another fifteen-minute walk to the Belém Tower, the early-16th-century fortress that, with the monastery, was jointly inscribed by UNESCO in 1983. Even if you don’t climb it, it’s the postcard image of the district and a fitting end to the riverside walk.

The walk end to end is about four kilometres and, with stops, fills two to four hours — a comfortable half day.
